About the guest speakers

Media and Publishing session (16.30-17.30): 

Frederika Mitchell, Media Operations Officer at 10 Downing Street 

Freddie is a civil servant responsible for managing media relationships with the Prime Minister’s Office and creating the “picture moments” on all Prime Ministerial events and visits. 

 

 

 

 

Paul Rutland, Digital Communications Officer at Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport 

Paul is a civil servant working in the heart of Government. His work covers a wide range of sectors including sport, tourism, tech, the arts, civil society, the media and much more. Day to day he produces digital content, runs Departmental social media channels and leads on digital communications for stories regularly at the top of the news agenda. 

 

 

Rhys Thomas, Senior Consultant at BLUE Communications 

BLUE Communications is the world's leading specialist PR & Communications consultancy based in the marine and energy sectors. As a Senior Consultant, Rhys is responsible for setting communications strategies for some of the biggest names in shipping and energy, helping them to transform the market through proactive communications and brand-building. 

 

 

Michael Pearson, New Formats and Platforms Editor at Reach plc 

Reach is the largest commercial national and regional news publisher in the UK, producing and distributing content through newspapers, magazines and digital platforms. Michael heads up a variety of emerging digital projects at Reach to help grow and find new audiences.  

 

 

Tom Chalmers, Managing Director of Legend Times (Legend Press | Hero | New Generation Publishing | University of Buckingham Press)  

Tom is founder and Managing Director of Legend Times, a book and journal publishing company, covering fiction, non-fiction, academic and self-publishing sectors. He is responsible for the day-to-day running and management of Legend Times’ various publishing activities, as well as reporting to Board and shareholders. 

 

 

 

Teaching and Research session (17.30-18.30):

Dr Sarah Waters, Researcher and Lecturer

Sarah specialises in Shakespeare studies, medical humanities, interdisciplinary research, CS Lewis and Inklings studies.

She has worked as an Instructor for Crandall University for visiting students at Regent's Park College, Oxford; an Associate Lecturer for Oxford Brookes University; a Visiting Lecturer at University of Buckingham; and a Specialist Guest Lecturer at Montreat College, NC (US).

 

 

 

 

Dr. Bethany Kelly, Director of Programmes at University of Buckingham’s School of Education 

Bethany has worked in education for over 25 years. Her teaching posts have taken her to different parts of the country, to boarding and day schools, mixed and single-sex schools. In addition to training teachers at University of Buckingham's School of Education, Bethany pursues research interests including the relationship between the recruitment of leaders, identity and gender. 

 

 

Patrick Rafferty, English Teacher, Hove Park Secondary School 

Patrick is a secondary school English teacher at Hove Park School in Brighton. He teaches students from a range of years (Year 8 – Year 11) and has a Tutor group that he has been with since their very first day at secondary school in Year 7 (they are now moving into Year 10). Previously, he taught Geography as a non-qualified teacher at a secondary school in Milton Keynes and, prior to that, was a Teaching Assistant for five years after completing his degree at Buckingham (2008).
