Rugby Club President update

BSUrugbySports

A new term has seen the UOB Bears Rugby Club grow as a fresh season gets underway. After the success of Freshers Fair back in October, the team is littered with a wide variety of students with different playing abilities, but all with the same desire and hunger to play rugby.

This term has seen the Men’s team gear up for the first University rugby game in two years against MK RUFC. It was fantastic to see everyone take it so seriously in the preparation for the game and many students, both current and alumni, express an interest in playing. Although the Bears went down to a 30-17 loss on a misty Wednesday evening, the game set a marker of where we are and showed the potential of the individuals and the team.

The autumn term has been an historic one for both University and Rugby Club after the launch of a Women’s rugby team. Although small in numbers, we have high ambitions of where we want the Club to be.

It has been great to create new bonds with the Buckingham Town Women’s Rugby Club, Buckingham Swans, and have their coach come down to support the ladies. Despite many laughs being spilt whilst the ladies have been training, they have been working on getting to grips with passing, attacking, and defending as a team and individuals. We have great links with Buckingham Rugby Club and Buckingham Swans for anyone, male or female, who is interested in more game time.

As we turn to look at the new term in January, the Rugby Club is busy organising more matches, tournaments, and team socials where the players can unwind and build relationships. We will continue to create interclub events, such as our recent Rugby vs Cheerleading dodgeball game, to raise the bar and rivalry between different teams at the University.

We actively encourage anyone who is interested in rugby, regardless of playing experience, to come down and give either our Men’s or Women’s teams a try. Take the leap and join us for a session.
