Why You Need to Fill in the Census 2021

It’s census time and here at the University of Buckingham’s SU, we are actively encouraging all of our students – international and home – to submit theirs by, or just after, the March 21st deadline.

So, why is it so important that you as university students fill out the census 2021?

  • For starters, it’s a legal requirement to fill out the census as you can be fined £1,000 for not doing so! Plus if you tag a photo once you have completed yours with #uniofbuckinghamcensus, you will be in with a chance of winning a £50 Amazon voucher which we think is better than being down £1,000.
  • If certain social groups are under-represented in the census then this can impact the UKs demographic picture and have an adverse effect on targeting support for local services where it is most needed.
  • But don’t worry, only carefully selected ONS staff or its sister agencies in Scotland and Northern Ireland have access to the personal census information you submit. The UK government only has access to this information once the data in anonymised and published – you cannot be identified at this point.

Filling in the census is an important step in compiling the demographic information of the UK but we understand that it can also be a little confusing if it’s your first time filling one in. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with the SU office if you have any questions!
