The Buckingham Debate Union was delighted to host an engaging Community Debate on the motion:
“This House Believes that Remote Work Is Better for Society Than Office-Based Work.”
We were honoured to welcome an outstanding panel of speakers: Professor Barnaby Lenon CBE, Sarah Haywood from Advanced Oxford, Professor Deba Bardhan-Correia, and Professor Len Shackleton, who brought a wealth of experience, thoughtful arguments and valuable perspectives to this important discussion.
The debate explored the opportunities and challenges of remote and office-based working, encouraging critical thinking, constructive disagreement and meaningful discussion. The audience Q&A added another valuable dimension to the evening, giving attendees the opportunity to engage directly with the arguments presented.
We extend our sincere thanks to all four speakers for their time and contributions, to everyone who attended and participated, and to all those who supported the organisation of the event. We would also like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Interim Vice-Chancellor David Cole and his office, as well as the Students’ Union, for their continued support and assistance.

At the Buckingham Debate Union, we believe that stronger communities are built through open dialogue, intellectual curiosity and the willingness to engage respectfully with different perspectives. We are proud to bring students, university staff and members of the wider Buckingham community together through debate.
Thank you to everyone who made the evening a success. We look forward to welcoming you to our future debates and speaker events!
