Black History Month β€οΈππ€
This October, the Students’ Union celebrated Black History month. This year’s theme is Black Pride and Black Powerβ€οΈππ€.
We reached out to our student leaders to ask them what Black Pride and Black Power meant to them. Their statements and achievements were all uploaded on Instagram.
We also had Black History month facts going up on our stories twice a week.
The first week of October we had a movie night. We watched Hidden Figures; the movie highlighted the contributions of 3 African American women, Katherine Johnston, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson, to Nasa during the Space Race.
The second week, ACS held a DJ Night- Just vibes- to celebrate African Music and artists. A big shoutout to the execs for their contribution.
The third week, we held a talk around empowerment and identity. Our speaker, Dr Brian Penduka, is from Zimbabwe. He is a law lecturer at the University of Buckingham. He is also a research and policy analyst, specialising in advancing human rights, the rule of law, and access to justice. His list of achievements is too long to be summarized in one text. He sat with students for a round table discussion around various topics including identity, overcoming struggles, redefining the lense through which we see black pride and power.
In the last week of October, we held our quiz night with a Black History Month theme. Students got to learn about Black history in the UK in a fun setting.
Happy Black History monthβ€οΈππ€!
