The Girl’s Night In event was hosted on Tuesday the 8th of March by the Students Union President, Katy Botha, to celebrate International Women’s Day. The first girls night in was hosted last year by Mary Harding following the rise in spiking incidents, the event was originally created to discuss matters that involve womxn on campus.
This event was specifically targeted towards International Women’s Day, #breakthebias selfie cards were given to womxn with encouraging representations of what equality should look like. Throughout the evening womxn were taking photos with these cards to encourage others to do the same.
Topics that are discussed at Girls Night In involve concerns of safety, womxn specific issues, spiking, adequate lighting on campus and more. The event was accompanied by a variety of snacks and reusable sanitary products, the products were provided to us by Hey Girls, an organisation that aids in the fight to end period poverty.
The organisation had sent around 20 reusable period products for our students to trial which seemed to be a huge hit at Girls Night In. These products sparked conversations about the #donotflush campaign and learning about ways in which students could become more sustainable with their sanitary products.
Feedback from Girls night in was positive suggesting that these events should occur every term. We look forward to hosting more Girls Night In events next term!!
