On the evening of 19th February, the Royal Latin Sports Hall felt alive, as it was filled with cheers and excitement, as the University of Buckingham Cricket Club held their first ever Charity Cricket Tournament. The tournament was set up to give back towards the community, helping raise over £100 towards Sanitree, a charity set up towards helping underprivileged women in India, with regards to their sanitary needs. The money raised also went towards helping HIV and AIDS trust, headed up by our very own Maggie! A fantastic bake sale helped raise the funds, while also keeping everyone fuelled and energetic as they watched the cricket.
The tournament was also special due to the highlight helped place on the new University of Buckingham Woman’s Cricket Club, as their members were pushed to the front and given the platform to display their wide variety of skills. Every team consisted of 3 women cricketer’s and every game has mandated that the ladies both batted and bowled. This further intensified the competitiveness of the event, as everyone was eager to give the best account of themselves. Standout performances from Fahmida (Team Yash) and Riya (Team Ish) pushed their teams further towards victory. Riya’s exceptional stroke play also ensured that she secured the Sarah’s Player of The Tournament. However Fahmida’s endeavor in the field saw her rightly Female Player of the Tournament

Every game went to the wire, and went on to be decided in the last over. We started with Team Ish and Team Yash, battling it out, only to be tied on the last ball. The final game was similarly decided by a fantastic bowling performance by Team Ish, against the batting might of Team Araash. Throughout the tournament, multiple cricketers put their hand up, but none moreso then the players of Team Ish, resulting in them winning the tournament, due to leading at the league stage. Meyappan’s all round heroics secured him Player of the Tournament, while Araash’s heat seeking yorkers saw him win Bowler of the Tournament. Aizaz managed to land a few huge ones at the right moment resulting in him securing Batter of the Tournament.
All in all it was a fantastic night, filled with good energy, good food, and most of all, an excellent showing of competitive spirit and passion. To find out more about our cricket clubs you can do so here:
