Freshers 26 Wrap Up

Kamva Gcaza - President

Freshers’ Week has officially come to an end and what an incredible start to the year it has been. It was truly a joy meeting students from all corners of the globe and welcoming them into our university community. Being elected as Students’ Union President this year is something I’m incredibly grateful for and even more so during such a special moment in the University’s journey.

As we celebrate the University’s 50th anniversary, I feel genuinely honoured to be part of its history and to stand alongside the 50th intake of students to walk through its doors. There’s something powerful about knowing that this year isn’t just another academic year. It’s a milestone.

One of my personal highlights was the campus and town tours. Showing new students around never gets old. It’s always rewarding helping them discover the best local spots where students love to hang out and most importantly where to find a good deal. Those small moments often make a big difference in helping students feel settled and at home.

My favourite event of the week without a doubt was our Speed Social. Seeing so many students turn up, stepped out of their comfort zones and start building friendships was genuinely special. It’s been amazing to see how many of those connections are still going strong today. Creating spaces where students feel welcomed, included and part of a community is exactly what Freshers’ Week is all about and we’re proud to have made that happen.

As we look ahead we’re excited for what promises to be an amazing year filled with events, opportunities and unforgettable moments. And whatever you do, just remember there’s always Quiz Night on Monday evenings at 8pm. 😉

Here’s to a brilliant year ahead.

Maneeka Bhujun- VP of Voice

As your Vice President Voice, my role is to represent you, stand beside you, and ensure that every student feels heard, supported, and included. Watching the first weeks of your university journey unfold has been a powerful reminder that when students show up as their authentic selves, this community truly comes alive. That is why student voice matters.

The first days of university often arrive with a mix of excitement and uncertainty. Freshers’ Week reminded us that this journey is not meant to be walked alone.

One of the highlights of Welcome Week for me was the Speed Social. It was the very first time we organised this event (a big shoutout to Kamva!), and it was incredibly rewarding to witness connections forming in real time. Seeing strangers turn into friends and knowing that some of those connections may last a lifetime. This is exactly what SU is about.

What mattered most wasn’t any single moment or activity, but the spirit behind it all. These early experiences set the tone for what lies ahead. University life is shaped not only by lectures and deadlines, but by friendships, resilience, and memories that stay with you long after this chapter closes.

As your VP Voice, I encourage all of you to be loud. Say yes to opportunities, stay curious, and engage with your Students’ Union.

Freshers’ Week may have come to an end, but it marks the beginning of something much bigger!

Lydia Offei- VP of Communities

What a great start to the year! It’s truly been a joy to get to meet everybody and welcome them into our community. It’s been a busy few weeks helping direct people to their classes, give tours of our beautiful campus and local area, and answering all your questions about the sports clubs and societies we have to offer.

The events this year have been so good, it’s hard to just pick one favourite! The speed social was obviously a highlight – seeing people get to meet fellow new students at the event, and go on to form their friendship groups has been lovely to see. We also had our very own student band – ON/CALL - perform their first show of the year which was a hit! With a mix of songs on the setlist, there truly was something for everybody – and they even had you all begging to hear more!

Looking ahead, I’m excited for a year of plenty of great events, and lots of memories made. This term is already shaping up to be one to remember – with a range of society events, sports club training sessions and cultural events taking place. I also host a weekly crafternoon in the OTM on Tuesday afternoons. If you haven’t already, why not pop down and give it a go? 👀 It’s totally free!

Becoming part of the Student Union team this year has been incredible – and it’s only been the first month! Here’s to a great year – I can’t wait to see you at an event soon!
