On Saturday 20th July a Skills Day was hosted by our Scalpel Society in partnership with our Trauma and Orthopeadics Surgical Society at Milton Keynes Hospital.
Thank you very much to our wonderful speakers representing each their own specialty, and inspiring the future of surgery into their respective paths!
With a fascinating introduction to orthopeadics from Mr Atif Malik , to a transnasal exploration of ENT's more technological world by Mr Asit Arora, and finally, but in no way the least, a talk by Mr Samir Matloob who really set the expectations for the day in the morning with a slice of neurosurgery!
Where on top of this, we had the pleasure of welcoming BOMSA representation by Lok Pok Cheng and John Adekoya, along with Ameer Khamise for SFO in ENTUK. Where they not only described potential avenues for those interested in the specialties, but also involved themselves in leading their own workshop element, with John mastering hand-tie basics and Amir showcasing ENT surgeries in VR.
Where we had a spread across the hall, of ENT and Neurosurgery, among the aneurysm clippings and seeing up a volunteer's (or willing guinea pig's) nose amongst other very hands-on elements, the delegates had a chance to ask any questions to our speakers as they themselves were leading the workshops. Very much fulfilling the theatre teaching environment we wanted, just with the undivided attention on the students!
And of course not to forget our Orthopeadics Workshops fully supported by Mr Mahmood Ahmed and Claribone 's own (Mr Leo Gundle and Dr Holly Sheldon-Wilson)! Where everyone really absolutely loved challenging the 'how to' of k-wires and external fixation on metacarpal bones, the further explanation of bone anatomy and very in-depth suture session!
Each with their own unique experience, we were grateful they could each make their way on a Saturday to help us!
The efforts of Scalpel's committee, BOMSA, ENT/SFO, Storz and our very own university's UoB TOSS, were all absolutely a necessary for the event!
Where, of course not to forget, the event wouldn't have been a reality without MDU's support!
