The UoB women’s football team finally got a chance to take to the pitch and show how hard they have been working. With some last minute preparation, adapting to an 11-aside pitch compared to the usual 5-aside pitch was a worry, but the team pulled through. In their second ever competitive match, first 11-aside match, they played the amazing Cranfield Ladies team. In the end, the UoB team pulled through with an 8-1 win!
With their coach taking the role of referee, the President stepped in as the coach for this match. This meant that the girls had to communicate and work together to get the end results as the President was also playing and couldn’t be coaching from the sidelines. That being said, early on into the first half Social Executive, Bia, scored their first goal! From there, various girls such as Edan, Leila, Fliss, Elizabeth, and Olivia all scored as well. UoB finished the first half with a 5-0 lead.
As the sun started setting and the second half began, Cranfield scored their first goal off the bat. After the initial goal, a few changes were made and the girls were moved around to ensure the defense was strong. From then on, the defense held strong and kept most plays from getting into the box. The few plays that made it past UoB's defensive line were saved by our amazing goal keeper, Zoe!
The game was overall very exciting for the UOB women’s football team in terms of the score and the experience gained from our first 11-aside match.
A huge thank you goes to all the students, past and present, who came to support us and to the few alumni girls who came back to play in the match. The President’s player of the match went to Zoe who made some incredible saves in her first ever 11-aside goal.
