This term marked one year of the UOB Women’s Football Club existing at the university. This is a huge achievement for us and as time goes on we are growing and improving our club. September Freshers Fair brought in a wide variety of students with different playing abilities, but all with the same interest in playing Football.
The term began with a social at the university’s OTM bar. This was a great opportunity for all the members to connect and get to know one another outside of the football pitch. The training atmosphere is light hearted and fun as the girls continue to connect and learn new things about each other. That being said, with the help of our coach, the club has been training and working hard to improve its abilities.
Throughout the last few terms we have been searching for a 5-aside league to join and give us the competitive factor we all desire. The autumn term finally brought us an opportunity, with our first mock tournament coming up on December 9th, and the official league starting in the new year. The best way to learn and improve is by doing, and this league will be a great opportunity to further the club and our members skills.
To finish off the term, the club hosted a charity football tournament. All proceeds went towards the Helen Bamber Foundation, a charity that provides specialist and long-term care for people who have experienced severe trauma from trafficking and torture. Not only was the tournament for a great cause, but it also is a great way to bring recognition to our club. We welcome any girls to play even if they aren’t a member and sometimes this leads to them becoming members. These tournaments give the club a goal and a chance to experience some competitive football.
Next term the club is going on a day trip to the Arnold Clark Cup in February. Following a sensational summer of women’s football, where the club went to several women’s Euros games, we are looking forward to experiencing even more. This is a fun experience that members have enjoyed in the past and a great learning experience for the members who are new to the sport.
